Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen is a national disgrace! History has a tendency to only remember the greats, so it is very likely that history will forget about Jim Pillen entirely. In the rare event he isn’t forgotten the second he leaves office, it will likely be as a result of Kamala Harris winning the presidential election by one singular electoral vote - that from Nebraska’s second congressional district, all but ensuring he will be remembered as the failure, the joke, and the man who couldn’t seize the moment because of his own weakness.
Governor Pillen's Missed Opportunity:
In the heartland of America, where cornfields stretch to the horizon, a political battle has been brewing that could have shifted the tides of the national election strategy. Nebraska, one of only two states that can split its Electoral College votes, has become the latest battleground for electoral system reform. However, despite the vigorous push from former President Donald Trump, conservative political pundit Charlie Kirk, the Nebraska Freedom Coalition, and many other local Nebraskan GOP leaders, Governor Jim Pillen's efforts to revert Nebraska to a winner-take-all system have fumbled. This is now his legacy.
The endeavor to change Nebraska's unique system, where electoral votes can be split based on congressional district wins, was not just a matter of state politics but carried implications for presidential elections. Governor Pillen, taking cues from national Republican figures, aimed to unify the state's electoral power behind one candidate, ostensibly to bolster the GOP's chances in the 2024 election.
In a very possible outcome, with President Trump winning the sunbelt states of NV, AZ, GA, and NC, and Harris with a stronghold on the rust belt states of PA, WI, and MI, the entire election could hinge on Nebraska’s second congressional district. If Harris wins NE-02 + the rust belt, that secures her the 270 votes needed to take the Presidency. If President Trump wins the sunbelt + NE-02, that would take the election to a 269-269 tie, sending it to the state legislatures. Since republicans hold more state legislative majorities than democrats, we could reasonably assume Trump would win the election.
However, this move towards Winner Take All was met with resistance, from Democrats and weak Republicans who lack even the slightest note of courage. Scared of “controversy”, “election interference”, and “disrupting the status quo”, the complacency of Nebraska Nice politics is a shining example of how Nebraska Republicans care more about the next Husker Game than they do saving our republic.
Governor Pillen's strategy to potentially call a special legislative session was seen by many as a last-minute rush, lacking the groundwork needed for such a significant change. Critics argue that Pillen underestimated the complexity of Nebraska's legislative process and wonder why he didn’t prioritize such an important issue earlier in the year. Allowing for a split in electoral votes is highly irregular in the American electoral system. After one failed special session for property tax reform, Governor Pillen tried to shirk his responsibility by stating he would only call a special session if 33 votes were secured publicly & prior to the session being called.
The failure lies squarely on Pillen's shoulders for several reasons: Pillen failed to secure the necessary support within his party, a strong leader like Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, would not have struggled to secure the support. Despite having a Republican majority, the weakness of Nebraska’s elected Republicans was unmatched. His inability to convince even a handful of GOP senators speaks volumes about his “leadership” or perhaps his persuasive power.

Looking Forward:
The fallout from this failure might not just be a missed opportunity for the GOP in national elections but could also reflect on Governor Pillen's leadership within Nebraska. While his intention might have been to strengthen the Republican presidential candidate's chances, the execution has highlighted a disconnect between the Governor's office and the legislative body.
In politics, timing, consensus, and perception are everything. Governor Tim Pillen's push for a winner-take-all system in Nebraska, lacked finesse in these areas, leaving the state's electoral system unchanged and perhaps teaching a lesson in the art of political maneuvering. For now, Nebraska remains one of the few states to not properly represent the people’s voice in the Electoral College, a missed opportunity both for our country and for the good people of Nebraska. From now on, when you read the name Jim Pillen, you can replace it with the word “failure.” He will remain a failure until he can correct this massive blunder. Though too late for 2024, let’s hope he can fix this, for the good people of Nebraska, in time for the next election.
